What to Look for in a Child’s Swimsuit

Summertime is here, and with that comes hours and hours spent at the pool. Given how much children can grow between swimming seasons, shopping for a new one is something of an inevitability. There’s more to finding a good swimsuit than just looking for whatever fits and looks fun though. Do you know what to look for in a child’s swimsuit?

Color

Blues and greens are popular swimsuit color choices, but they aren’t the safest colors. They all but disappear under the water. Bright oranges, yellows, and lime green tend to be the most visible under the water, whether you’re in a pool or a lake. Darker colors can be mistaken for shadows or piles of leaves, while white can be mistaken for reflections of clouds. Bright neon colors show up best and are therefore safest.

Fit

Swimsuits should fit well, being neither too snug nor too loose. If the swimsuit is too tight, it will be difficult to get on and off, especially when it’s wet. Your child also won’t be able to wear it as long, since they’ll grow out of it faster. On the other hand, make sure that the swimsuit isn’t too loose. Loose swimsuits can get caught on rails and stairs, which can be dangerous. By the same token, it can be a bit easier on your wallet if you’re able to find a swimsuit that can grow with your child. Features like drawstring waists and snaps could help you extend the time your child can wear the swimsuit.

Sun Protection

Sun exposure and swimming often go hand in hand, which can lead to sunburns. Help protect your child’s skin by choosing swimsuits that offer a measure of sun protection. Swimsuits with long sleeves, like rash guards, can help protect the skin from sun exposure. Look for swimsuits that have a UPF 50+ sun protection rating. The fabric of these suits has been tested and found to block out at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

When looking for a swimsuit for your child, it’s important to consider safety as well as your child’s preferences. Find one in a color that will show up easily under the water, fits well, and offers some sun protection. That way your child’s swimsuit can help keep them safe when they’re swimming this summer.
